Dudhsagar Waterfall – A River of Milk Cascading from Heaven

Dudhsagar, which literally means Sea of Milk, is one of the most stunning waterfalls in India. During the monsoon, it truly looks like a river of milk pouring down from the sky.

🗺️ Important: Two Entry Points to Dudhsagar

1. Kolem(collem) (Recommended)

   • Government-approved entry point

   • All official trekking and jeep safaris start from here

   • Guides are available and mandatory for jungle trekking

   • Safer, better organized, and well-supported

   • We started our journey from Kolem 

2. Castle Rock

   • Not government-approved

   • You can trek on your own from here, but:

     • No official guides are available

     • Safety is a concern, especially during heavy rains

     • Trail may be confusing or risky without local knowledge

   • Not recommended for first-timers or during monsoon

✅ Tip: Always prefer Kolem for a safe and supported experience, especially during monsoon season.

There are two ways to reach Dudhsagar Waterfall: by jeep safari or by trekking.

We visited on 1st of July via Kolem .

🧭 How to Reach Dudhsagar Waterfall

🚙 Option 1: Jeep Safari from Kolem 

• Buy your entry and jeep tickets at the Kolem counter

• Purchase entry tickets and hop on a shared jeep.

• The jeep takes you inside the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary (a 30–45 min ride, one way).

• You’re dropped 100 meters away from the waterfall.

• Small canteen is present here. You can order the food before heading to the falls.

• Washrooms are available at this point

• A short walk [100mts] (tricky but low intensity) takes you to the base of the falls.

• You get 1.5 hours to spend at the waterfall before returning.

• Head back to the town after your visit.

• 💰 Jeep Safari Costs:

  • Per person: ₹1,000 

  • Entry fee is different from this Jeep Safari cost.

🧳 Essentials to Carry for Jeep Ride:

• ID proof (mandatory)

• Raincoats/umbrella

• Drinking water

• Some snacks

• Camera

• Comfortable shoes, crocs, or sandals

🥾 Option 2: Trekking from Kolem 

• Total trekking distance: 11 km one way

• If you have your own vehicle, the distance reduces to 9.5 km one way

🌿 Trek Entry Instructions:

• At the starting point, meet your guide (hiring guide is mandatory).

• The guide accompanies you for 1.5 km in your vehicle. Vehicle parking is available for ₹100.

• From the parking point, there are two route options:

  • 🚫 Rail Track Route:

    • Not recommended for the onward journey

    • For return journey only (last 4 km) to shorten the trek

  • ✅ Jungle Trail: Highly recommended for the onward journey.

🌳 Trekking via Jungle Trail

• Begins on a lush trail beside a massive DudhSagar river[it meets Mandovi] that stays with you throughout the trek.

• Numerous water streams must be crossed—some ankle-deep. Wet shoes are inevitable, so embrace it!

• Initially, you may try removing shoes to cross rivers, but eventually, you’ll stop bothering as there are too many.

• The trail has kilometer markers and echoes with train whistles—adding to the magical feel.

• The path is mostly flat with just a 5-minute mild climb leading to scenic views.

• Some stretches feel surreal, with misty forests, animal tracks, and flowing streams.

• After 2kms stretch in jungle, you join the jeep route and most of your trek is on the same route.

🥪 Midway Break (after 7 km):

• A small canteen offers bread omelet and Maggi.

• Rest here before starting the final 4 km.

🌊 Final Stretch:

• After about 9-10 km, you get your first glimpse of the upper falls—absolutely breathtaking!

• Cross a few bridges and reach the Forest Department Canteen, where jeeps drop passengers.

  • Order your return food before heading to the waterfall so it’s ready when you return.

  • Washrooms are available at this point 

• The final 100 mts gets trickier. Stay close to the mountain side for safety, as the water roars beside you.

• A short climb and descent lead to the majestic view…

🌟 The Majestic Falls

• It feels like a massive jug of milk is pouring straight from the heavens.

• Water thunders down like the Amazon taking over a jungle.

• Take time to soak in the view—not just through your camera, but with your eyes and heart.

• After pictures and rest, begin your return journey.

🚉 Return Trek:

• Last 4 km are usually via railway track—scenic but bit uncomfortable[since walk is on the pebbles(big Khadi)], but quicker.

• Once back at your vehicle/start point, pay the guide and begin the drive back home.

🏕️ Trek Essentials:

• ID proof (mandatory)

• Raincoat is mandatory. Umbrellas aren’t practical for an 11 km walk.

• Good shoes or crocs for walking and crossing streams.

• Water bottle (many refill points on the trail).

• Light snacks and camera.

• PS: Shoes will get wet, no matter what!

🔔 Important Tips:

• Last entry into the forest: 11:00 AM

• Be at the ticket counter by 10:15 AM

• Best time to visit: During monsoon, when the falls are in full glory.

• Note: Jeep rides are closed from June to October.

• Also: If rains are too heavy, trekking might also be suspended—check in advance.

💰 Trek Costs:

• Entry Ticket (per person): ₹327

• Guide Fee:

  • For a group of 10: ₹3,000

  • Private Guide (Optional):

    • Quoted: ₹2,500

    • We bargained and paid ₹1,800 for 2 people

✅ Tip: You can hire a private guide instead of joining a group. It gives more flexibility.

PS: Carry Cash since there are no ATMs or Network after the starting point 

Don't play in water. Its not safe. Don't cross the safety lines 

My humble and deepest request--> Don't litter. Get all the plastic you carry, back to the starting point and throw in a dustbin.
